A wide range of ideas, concepts, and facts are covered during fourth grade at Deer Creek Christian School. Language arts includes grammar, writing, and reading. The students work hard to understand English grammar. They then show they have mastered the practical usage of the language in creative writing assignments. Reading class contains read-aloud practice along with critical thinking discussions of the stories, vocabulary work, comprehension practice, and weekly book reports that promote a love of reading. Cursive handwriting is reinforced in fourth grade by incorporating it through all subjects. The spelling curriculum is comprised of commonly used words with some bonus words added.
History finds the students learning how the United States was formed, meeting heroes of this great nation, and memorizing some key documents, all from a Christian perspective.
In Bible the students dive into both the Old and New Testaments, learning about prophets and kings as well as Jesus’ teachings and Paul’s ministry. Memorizing Bible verses helps the students understand what it means to “hide” God’s Word in their hearts so that they may live to honor and please Him.
Science brings the opportunity to learn about God’s world and His orderliness through the study of plants, animals, insects, sound, energy, weather, and the solar system. This class leads to scientific exploration through hands-on projects as well as great discussions regarding God’s master design. In Math, the students expand their basic knowledge of multiplication and division through daily practice and learn to apply their knowledge to enhance everyday problem solving skills.
Fourth graders spend time learning to become organized and responsible for themselves and their work. As teachers, we strive to help them see their potential for success and realize that they are ultimately responsible for their own work and the grades they have earned as a result of their work.
